Here's a look back at the 2011 draft with some grading. These are all personal opinion, there was no formula, just my decision. I looked at the players careers, as well as best numbers and overall consistency. These grades can still undergo some change over the next few years.
FIRST ROUND:
-------------------------------------------------
THE LOTTERY
1 Miami Heat - Harrison Barnes SF 6'8'' 215 19 B- B- C B- C+ A
Current Ratings: A- A C+ B+ C+ D
There was no doubt in anybody's mind that Harrison Barnes was the consensus #1 overall pick in this draft. The Heat went with the easy pick here and it looks like Barnes has turned into the star that many people expected. He spent his first few seasons with the Heat until being dealt to the Grizz and playing his last few seasons with the Indiana Pacers. He has been on many winning teams over the years but has never broken the championship barrier. The Pacers had a small window, but Barnes didn't get his ring. Now he's stuck on the mediocre Bulls. This was an obvious choice for Trunks (I think) and he has panned out to be a legit superstar.
GRADE: A
2 Atlanta Hawks - Terrance Jones SF 6'8'' 220 19 B- C C- B- B- AA
Current Ratings: B- A- D+ A- A- D
Former Hawks GM tensixnine made an extremely risky pick here by selecting Terrence Jones. It was said and expected by many that the draft was going to end up as Barnes/Irving going 1 and 2 respectively. tensixnine went out on a limb and was criticized by many for his selection. He fell under the pressure and dealt Jones in a very lopsided deal. This was the jumpstart for Jones who was been a stud since. He's had stints with the Nuggets and Wizards and has made 2 defensive teams. His offense has never been FANTASTIC but he's put up a few 20+ ppg seasons. Great selection here.
GRADE: A
3 Phoenix Suns - Kyrie Irving PG 6'2'' 170 19 C+ B- B B- D+ A
Current Ratings: B- B+ B+ B+ D+ C
Poor tensixnine.. He had Jones... dealt him.... then dealt Blake Griffin for Irving because people were telling him he made the wrong pick. From his own words, "but I know I got bashed for taking Jones and he beasted. I get Irving to balance out my team and he sucked dick. LoL Broph smh." Anyway, Kyrie has had an awful career. Not only has he failed to gain good ratings, but his production has been downright awful. He's been a TO mongrel who scores at an inefficient rate. He bounced around the league a lot, with numerous teams giving him a 2nd chance. He never delivered....
GRADE: D
4 Portland Trailblazers - Jonas Valanciunas C 7'1'' 240 19 B D+ D C+ C+ A
Current Ratings: A- D D B- B- C
Smh... I don't like you Jonas. Jonas started his career hot after being drafted by me. His ratings after the first TC were B+ D+ D+ B- B- and was producing a good amount of points offensively. He looked like a good pick TBH. After that, his game never developed. He continued to disappoint TC after TC and eventually was let go in FA by the Blazers and landed with the Pistons. He's had some solid scoring years in his career, but the lack of rebounding/blocking for a big of his size really killed him. BUST
GRADE: D+
5 Memphis Grizzlies - Jared Sullinger PF 6'9'' 285 19 B+ D+ D C+ B- B
Current Ratings: A- C- F+ A- A- C
Even at the time of the draft the hype for this pick was fairly high. He was the most UOSL4 ready player heading into the draft and after many camps/good TC's he has turned into an elite big man in this league. Sullinger wasn't expected to become the defensive force he was in his prime. Early in his career, his defense was weak, but you could see year by year his BPG and SPG rising... The prime of his career was the last few years he spent in San Antonio. The teams he played on were usually playoff teams, but he still hasn't reached championship caliber.
GRADE: A-
6 Los Angeles Clippers - Jan Vesely SF 6'11'' 230 21 B- C C+ B- C A
Prime Ratings: B B- C+ B+ C+ C
Prince was ridiculed for a long time after making this selection in the draft. Jan was expected to be nothing more than a solid backup and that's just what he was. He spent a good chunk of his career with me and I have to say he was a dang good bench player. He provided efficient scoring, good passing, and solid rebounding off the bench. He was a pleasant surprise. Obviously, this is not the type of player you want at #6 though.
GRADE: C+
7 Golden State Warriors - Derrick Williams PF 6'9'' 240 20 B C D+ C+ C+ A
Current Ratings: A- C C- B B+ C
Spence made a nice selection here at #7. He made sure that Williams became the starting PF for the Warriors by camping him a lot. Williams contributed right away for the Warriors and become a threat on offense to be reckoned with. He's made 3 stops with the Warriors, but has been unable to acquire a championship any of the stops. Great scorer and good value @ #7.
GRADE: A-
8 Memphis Grizzlies - Jordan Hamilton SF 6'7'' 210 21 B B- C- C C+ A
Current Ratings: B+ A C- B- B+ C
Amazing draft for the Grizzlies! What can be said about Hamilton? Dude has been an absolute stud throghout his career. After a solid rookie season with the Grizz he was dealt to the Hawks. He spent 5 solid seasons there averaging around 21ppg with them, but then came the controversial deal. The Hawks Jordan Hamilton for Carmelo Anothony. Although Carmelo got them a championship, he was much older than Hamilton.. Hamilton still had a good 7-8 years in him when the deal went through. Either way, he ended up with the Spurs where his career really took off and averaged a career high 27ppg. He spent the last couple seasons with the Cetlics where he was forced to take a secondary role for the sake of the team, but was unable to get a championship. Now he's on the rebuilding Jazz doing what he does best... averaging 28ppg
GRADE: A
9 Detroit Pistons - Donatas Motiejunas PF 7'0'' 224 21 C+ B D+ C+ C+ A
Current Ratings: C+ B+ C- A- B+ C
Donas was a very intriguing big man prospect. Nobody quite knew how he would fit into the league. Whether he'd be a SF or a big man or whether he'd be a scorer or defender. Turns out that he position was Center and he became a force defensively. Donas will always be remembered for his shot-blocking and rebounding complimented by a unique outside focused offensive game. His offense never quite developed, but no need for that when you're averaging 3-4bpg and 10-11rpg.
GRADE: B+
10 Golden State Warriors - Evan Fournier SG 6'6'' 190 21 C+ B- C+ B- D+ A
Current Ratings: B- A- B- A- C- C
After quickly being traded from Spencer's Warriors to styro's Lakers Fournier turned in a couple very nice TC's to begin his career and looked like a very good prospect. The problem with Fournier early in his career was that he had a very inconsistent offense. His defense was great and he showed that be averaging near and over 2.0spg at points during his career. He spent his later years with the 76ers where the offensive struggle continued. At one point I can recall him starting and struggling to reach the double digit mark in PPG, but he never disappointed defensively. At this point in the draft, it was actually a good pick.... He showed promise early and disappointed late
GRADE: B
11 Toronto Raptors - Travis Leslie SG 6'4'' 202 21 B+ D+ D B+ C+ C
Current Ratings: B+ C- D+ A- B+ D
Unfortunatey I don't have his stats because he has retired, but I can recall him spending some time early in his career with the Raptor until eventually signing with me. I started him at SG where he averaged around 12ppg, 7rpg, 1.5spg, and 1.5bpg. He was really an elite defender @ SG/SF when given the chance. Later he played with the Mavs and got some minutes there. A very unique player at SG/SF that we haven't seen since. I actually like this pick because he contributed when given time on the court.
GRADE: B
12 New Jersey Nets - John Jenkins SG 6'4'' 215 20 C+ B+ D+ C D A
Current Ratings: B A D+ B+ C- C
What a great pick here by.....LUKEY! Where are you my friend? Anyway solid pick, but then he made a questionable deal by sending him to the Nuggets (or was it through FA). Marty held him for a few seasons where he averaged the low 20's in the PPG. Finally he made his home in GS where he will be remembered for helping the run 'n gun team win the championship. He came close again last year with the Mavs, but they lost to the Knicks in the Finals. The amazing thing about Jenkins is that his game hasn't dropped off after 14+ seasons in the league. Very impressive.
GRADE: A+
13 Boston Celtics - Enes Kanter C 6'11'' 261 19 B- D D- C+ B- A
Current Ratings: A- D+ D+ A- A- C
Kanter was drafted at an early age of 19 years old. His first few TC's were simply amazing. He quickly reached ratings of B+ D+ D+ B+ B+ A by his 2nd year. By his 4th year in the league his offense was still coming around only averaging 12ppg with the Celtics. His defense was still stellar, but he hadn't reached all-start caliber. He changed scenes and landed with the Mavs where he averaged 21ppg, but since then his offense has only reached a high of 16ppg. Kanter, though will be remembered for his tremendous shot-blocking and rebounding. He's made 2 stints with the Mavs so it's only right that he's with them and the closing of his career. Hopefully he can win one for the meanguy...
