On the weekend before the first sim of the regular season the Nets feature one of the more exciting teams in the league. Everyone will be looking to see if the duo of Kevin Garnett and Jason Kidd will make the impact that is expected of it.
Their projected starting line-up looks to be Kidd and Garnett, as well as Richard Jefferson, Nenad Krstic and Eddie Griffin. On paper they appear to have enough scoring from their second and third scorers. Their starting big men are all very versitile. Obviously they have the star power. There should be no doubt as to whether this team can be great.
Is New Jersey a championship contender though? It's tough to say. This is a roster that really lacks a respectable center to say the least. Eddie Griffin, the projected starter, was signed off of the street just days ago and the recently acquired Jeff Foster and Fabricio Oberto really lack any kind of defensive presence in the paint. While the Nets like Griffin a lot, this team lacks interior defense and rebounding... even with KG.
With that said, it will be very hard for the Nets to be victorious over teams like Toronto, Miami, Cleveland and especially Washington. They will have to improve their front court in order to be on the same level as these teams. Either that or their best players better have career seasons.
As for now, look for the Nets to be carried by KG, Kidd, and Jefferson to a 50 win season and possibly a decent playoff run. Anything more will be overacheiving.
