The 2008 Point Guard Draft Class has potential to be a very strong group. The Senior class lacks talent, but thanks to guys like Darren Collison, Javaris Crittenton, Ty Lawson, O.J. Mayo, Derrick Rose and muc more, this class may be a good one.
Weaver's got game, but does he have enough potential?
Let's start with the top senior of the PG class, Washington State guard Kyle Weaver. Playing in the middle of nowhere has caused many scouts to overlook Mr. Weaver. But thanks to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances, The Washington Native was able to show what he's got. What turns on most scouts, is his versitility. More and more you see this being an important factor in UOSL. He's 6-5 and defensively, could play the 1, 2, or 3. He's also got great quickness that helps him get to the basket. Probably the one problem with Weaver is his shooting. Can't do a whole lot from the outside. Weaver reminds me of a less quick Devin Harris.
Who will have the better UOSL Career? Rose(left) or Mayo(right)?
Next, Let's take a look at the 2 fab freshmen. USC's O.J. Mayo and Memphis guard Derrick Rose. Mayo was highly touted in high school. For years, he was given the title of the next MJ or LBJ. But in his senior season, he started to fade out of the top rankings. But in his first year at USC, OJ Mayo proved to the world he is the greatest. Despite early departures by Pruitt and Young, Mayo lead USC to an NCAA tournament. Mayo was unbelievable in the regular season, averaging 16ppg. Mayo is an all around solid player. His projected ratings: B- C+ B- C D+ A.
And let's not forget about Derrick Rose. Rose got his equal share of love at the H.S. level. But rose didn't have the same output for the tigers as Mayo did for the Trojans. However, Rose may have the better upside. Unfortunately, Rose didn't play much in his freshman year, only starting 7 games and averaging only 8ppg. But from what we saw, Rose is extremely athletic who is tough to defend. Rose lacks an outside shot, but his quickness and strength enable him to score pretty much at will. He is also a great defender. Reminds me of a poor mans Dwayne Wade. Projected ratings: B- C- C+ B- C- A.
Now that we've looked at the Seniors and Freshmen, let's take a look at the Juniors and Sophomores. Underclassmen Darren Collison, Javaris Crittenton, and Ty Lawson are probably the top players in this years draft (Pending on declaration). Collison seems like a lotto lock. And Crittenton and Lawson could sneak into lotto, but right now they seem like mid 1st round picks.
Darren Collison, the leader of the PG class.
Collison seems to have the upperhand of this group because of more experience. Darren is a Junior at UCLA, right now, they are having another great season. Collison is having his typical 14-7 year. What he lacks is growth. His sophomore and junior years were nearly identical. Collison is good but needs to improve everywhere. Thankfully for Collison, potential may not be a concern, because he seems keen on being an immediate impact to UOSL. Quickness and passing have scouts drooling. Projected ratings: C B- B+ B- D+ B.
Javaris Crittenton, Mr. do it all, has already declared for the draft.
Javaris Crittenton has already put his name in the draft. Crittenton is my favorite of this group because of his abliity to do everything. Scouts can't say a whole lot of good or bad about him. He has room to grow, he's still young. Reminds me of a less athletic Steve Francis. Projected ratings: C+ C+ B- B- C- B.
Will Ty Lawson have the same success as comparison, Raymond Felton?
And last but not least, we take a look at the UNC sensation, Ty Lawson. Y'all know the type of player Lawson is. Physical, quick, and great in transition. Doesn't sound like a guy under 6 foot. But Lawson is a physically a beast. If only he could shoot and play defense. But scouts believe he could turn into an all around good player. Reminds me of Raymond Felton with less of a shot. Projected Ratings: C+ C B C+ D A
And keep an eye on Kansas guard Mario Chalmers, who brings quickness and great transition basketball to the Jayhawks. And also, DJ Augustin, who took the team on his shoulders after the departure of Kevin Durant. Also, Sherron Collins who reminds me of Lawson, maybe just not as UOSL ready.
From left to right: Mario Chalmers, DJ Augustin, and Sherron Collins.
And don't forget sharp shooting, TuJuan Porjer, who has unlimited Range. The first A+ shooter to enter the draft?:
