GM Dan Basone mentioned earlier this season that the off-season would be a huge turning point in the Lakers success for the future, and so far it has, for the worse. The Los Angeles Laker's lost 25-year-old shooting guard Monta Ellis to a 6 year 112 million dollar deal sent out by the San Antonio Spurs, one of the Laker's rivals. It was clear incoming to free agency that the Laker's had a limited amount of money to spend on their two big free agents because of the hard cap and Basone inked two deals worth about 40 million each, for six years. Monta Ellis clearly did not take this offer as he is now looking for new mansions in San Antonio and gave us a clear indication by clearing out his locker after the Laker's were eliminated in the second round. He had a great start to his career first spending his first few seasons with the Warriors, and then coming over in the off-season to the Laker's after they won their first championship. In three seasons with the Laker's he average around 15 ppg, 3 apg, 5rpg and 2 spg. He earned an all-defensive first team last season and an All Star appearance in 2006.
The Laker's lost in the second round to the Memphis Grizzlies and the year before the same thing happened to the Golden State Warriors. The Laker's lost a key part to their recent success and now are looking for new options. They recently have sent some money out to their forward Danilo Gallinari, Lakers desperately want to reach a deal with Gallinari and it looks like one could be in the works, more news will be headlined tomorrow. As for now, the Laker's have the same look, the same passion to do all they can to win. The next off-season will be another huge challenge, Emeka Okafor, Lamar Odom, David Lee, and Patrick O'Bryant will all become free agents. It is clear that Dan Basone knows what it takes to put together a contender and recent reports suggested that Monta Ellis was going to be shipped out after he got signed anyway, so the Laker's are not at a total loss. Look for some big strides to come out of LA in the next season or two as the face of their team could end of changing, and a new era will be born.
