Draft Notes-
In this SG class, there's one player that separates himself from the rest of this group, or even from the whole draft. And that is Karl Towns.
Will Karl be the first pick in this year's draft?
Karl is a big-time player who plays some of the best defense we've ever seen. He can match up on literally anyone and he'll get you a couple steals a game. He reminds me a lot of Bruce Bowen, but with Karl, you get a more complete game. IMO Karl is a step ahead of Bruce physically, and at such a young age, the sky is the limit for Karl. If he continues can grow, he could be a good player offensively as well.
The next few players that I'm going to talk about are borderline lotto players. In fact, I think 2 of them will fall out of the lotto. We'll start with DaVante Moore out of Texas. The one thing that sticks out about DVM is his unique ability to crash the boards and rack em up as if he's center. He's not extremely strong, or overly athletic, but thanks to a big body, and a good knack of crashing the boards, DVM is a player that guards will have trouble boxing out. DVM also has a deadly 3-point shot. One of the more underrated outside shooters in this class. His defense is sub-par, but scouts love his upside. Moore should be a late lotto-mid first round pick. Elijah Davis easily has the most balanced game in this class. Physically, this guy is a step ahead of the rest. Good quickness + good athleticism = danger for other teams. Unlike DVM, Elijah is not a good 3point shooter, but rather relies on his driving ability and his jump shot. Elijah also plays great defense especially around the perimeter. Overall, you get a very solid prospect in Davis. I personally think he'll be a late lotto pick. 8-14 range. And another SG fighting to hear his name in the top 13, is Frankie Smalls. Frankie is definitely small, at only 185 pounds, you think he would get beat around a bit. But that's not necessarily the case. Smalls plays big sometimes and shows good strength/athleticism. And although his amazing defense is focus on perimeter defense, and stealing, he can also plays inside defense fairly well. The biggest let down we saw in him, is his lack of offense. If he can turn his offensive game to be as productive as his defense, I think we will find ourselves with a pretty good starting SG.
After those 3, there really isn't any left on the board till we get to Matej Delinac. I'm sure this sharp shooter will find himself getting picked in the first round. He is an amazing outside shooter. Just amazing. And although he has C inside, don't let that fool you. Matej has good athletic skills, not enough to be in a dunk contest, but enough to see him on ESPN every once in a while. The down-side on him, however, is his lack of strength. I think he'll get bullied around his first few years. He needs to bulk up. Other than that, the rest of his game should eventually come around, if that potential is legit.
Mychal Ammons and Norman Gee have also been training very hard to get that first round contract. Ammons is a young player who has a nice upside, but is still very raw. And Gee is a scorer without the defense. Could one of these guys end up being something special at the next level?
