2019 UOSL2 Mock Draft
I did the teams based purely on record.
I decided to throw 1 trade in there. It is one that I felt made sense with who I had going #2. I tried to pick based off of need. If I felt the guy who was starting was solid enough, I didn't take a guy that played the same position...or tried not to atleast.
1st pick: San Antonio Spurs- Jashaun Agosto (Washington State) PG 20 5-10 175lbs C B A C D+ A SO
Agosto #1 when the Spurs have Thomas? I know, I know, this seems as bit of a shock. However how can you pass on a player this talented? He has great handles and passing, is fast, and can shoot from outside. Yes his defense needs a lot of work and he can’t take the ball to the hole, but who cares?
2nd pick: Denver Nuggets- Jordan Price (Georgia Tech) SF 19 6-8 225lbs B C+ C B- C A FR
Denver is a team that many GM’s thought waited too late to rebuild. Denver had 5 picks in the draft last year, and 4 first rounders. The problem we say is that 3 of the first rounders all saw their scouted potential drop to C. Agosto is off the board so what to do now? Price and Engel are the next best players. I like Price for his defense and inside scoring. Engel has a great all-around game, but price can come in and contribute right now with his ratings.
3rd pick: San Antonio Spurs (from Detroit Pistons) - Rip Engel (Penn State) SG 19 6-7 185lbs C+ C+ C B- C- A FR
I decided to include trades in here. This is the first one. The Pistons ship off the #3 pick to the Spurs for Jevon Thomas. The Spurs have no need for Thomas with Agosto in town, and the Pistons need a point guard. With Agosto off the board and one of the other top point guards being top 3 material, the Pistons grab a solid one via trade. The Spurs take Engel and get into full rebuilding mode. Agosto and Engel are great build blocks for a franchise.
4th pick: Houston Rockets: Jermaine Morgan (UCLA) C 21 7-1 260lbs B- D+ D+ C+ B- A JR
Top 3 guys are off the board, so who do the Rockets take? I can see them taking many different positions. They have Artem at SF so maybe not there. Cox has been a pleasant surprise so possibly not a SG either. They need a PG and a guy who can score. Lawson was their leading scorer at 13.1 a game. While they need a PG I don’t think Griffin is the pick. He will defend and pass the ball, but not score as much as they need. Palmer is the offensive threat that they need but the rest of his game is there. I think it comes down to what they decide to do with Parker. He is 23, but he has been in the league for 3 years and has seen his scouted potential drop to C. They could keep him, or let him walk as a free agent. I have them taking the big man in Morgan. His offensive game is solid, he is a solid rebounder, and has potential. He can team with Peters and provide a twin towers type of duo.
5th pick: Memphis Grizzlies- Griffin Pittman (Wake Forest) PG 21 6-1 185lbs C C+ B- B- D+ A JR
Memphis is an interesting team. They have 2 very good big men, a solid SF in Sidney, and an aging, but still solid PG in Williams. They lack a good SG. The problem is I don’t see any worth taking that high at #5. There are some solid big men, but with Jordan, Riek, and possibly Patterson, they won’t get a ton of playing time. I gave them Griffin. He might be behind Williams for now, but Deron is getting older. They need a replacement for when Deron leaves or retires. Pick the guy who can handle the ball and defend.
6th pick: Indiana Pacers- Jordan Green (Tennessee) C 20 6-10 270lbs C+ D D+ B B- B SO
I could give them a bust since that is what he wants. They have Favors who is a beast. They took Donatas last year at 6, but he isn’t looking that great right now. They need a SG, but like Memphis unless they are willing to take a gamble on one of them, I don’t see them taking one. Brooks and Donatas are at PF so possibly not a PF either. There are reports of them possibly shopping Favors. They could move up with Favors to possibly gain one of the big 3. If Favors is traded, they will need a C unless Donatas is the answer there. Many people are high on this player, and I can see why. He is a good defensive guy and can rebound. B potential might scare some people off, but he could be hiding A under that exterior.
7th pick: Boston Celtics: Tony Brown (North Carolina) PF 19 6-9 245lbs C+ D+ C B- C A FR
Boston needs some work. They lost KCRM to the T-Wolves in free agency which was a huge blow to them. They are rebuilding now so there are a lot of holes that need to be filled with young guys. Their best young player is Richardson at SG. Claver and Young are at the SF spot. They do need a PG though. I think they might have to wait a year for one to take on later in the draft. Boston needs a big guy to build off of. Brown is a pure potential pick. He can play post defense but needs work in other places.
8th pick: Los Angeles Clippers- Daijan Palmer (Wake Forest) PF 21 6-9 235lbs B C D+ C+ C A JR
The new GM decided to rebuild. They have 3 SF’s worth starting, but only 1 fits their youth movement. Deng and Gay need to be traded if this youth movement will continue. I like Hood as the SF and I even like Thomas some. With the exception of Deng’s and Gay’s huge contracts, they don’t have many long deals. To me it comes down to Palmer or Marrero for a big. Marrero is the better scorer and defensive player now, but has less scouted potential. However, Palmer isn’t too far behind him in those departments. I say the Clippers take a gamble and select the potential guy in Palmer.
9th: Philadelphia 76ers- Desmond Maddox (Louisville) SF 21 6-7 210lbs C+ B C- C+ C B JR
Philly had a great core of players. The problem is they all got injured when it was crunch time. Bosh retired, Deron was shipped off, and Iggy is still on the team, with a close to impossible to move contract. They do have Ferguson as their point guard, which is a good thing since they are not likely to find on in this draft. They have Woods as a very good defensive and rebounding center if they decide to keep him. If not, they have a good backup in Papa who can come in and start. Iggy needs to be traded for the team to continue the youth movement. Papa and Woods in the middle is a great combo, and Ferguson at the point also helps. Iggy is the scorer at the 2, and they need a small forward. That is where Maddox comes in. He is a scorer from the outside. He might be able to improve his defense and help Iggy out some as well.
10th: Utah Jazz- DeJuan Marrero (Indiana) C 20 7-0 245lbs B+ D+ C- B- C B SO
Nova has horrible luck. Lost Stephenson to free agency then blew his team up. They have some pieces, like Jenkins and Smith in the middle. There is no doubt that Nova will try and move up to grab a better player. He might also try and trade the people he has for better players. Then again I can see Nova just taking a guy because he can, doesn’t matter if it works with his team or not. There really is nothing behind this pick. Nova doesn’t need his talent because of the fact that he has two very good bigs already. I’m just not overly impressed with either of the SG prospects and the chance that they are boom or bust type of players. Utah can always trade Smith or Jenkins.
11th: Milwaukee Bucks- Andrija Milutinovic(Serbia) SG 21 6-7 195lbs C B C+ C C- A JR
Beasley and Sullivan man the middle. Jennings is the point. The young Pierre Wright is one of the wings but what about the other? They have a good balance of inside scoring and out. They do need a shooting guard though to balance out their team. I say they take a risk on the foreign player. He has a great 3 point shot and solid handles for a rookie shooting guard. If he develops then the Bucks will be sick soon.
12th: Phoenix Suns (via New Orleans)- Will Mack(Colorado) PF 20 6-10 240lbs C+ D+ C- C+ B B SO
Phoenix made the playoffs this year but does get a lotto pick from New Orleans. Pinson is a very good center and mans the middle. Garrett has trouble handling the ball and as a result commits too many turnovers. Jane looks to be a bust right now, however there are some bright spots. They have 3 picks in the draft and might find a team that is willing to move up. London also was drafted as a PF but is the SF now due to his outside game. While they do need a SG, I have them taking a PF. Mackis not a scorer, but he is a beastly rebounder. He could go higher if people don’t care that he can’t score much. If his defense turns around he could be a serious threat with Pinson in the middle.
13th: Utah Jazz- Jordan Washington(Texas A&M) SG 22 6-6 205lbs B C+ C- C C- B
Nova is back with his 2nd lotto pick. I have him tacking a need here with a high flyer. Washington is okay, not overly great at anything. He can take the ball inside and finish, but his defense is lacking and his 3 point shot isn’t there yet. It is a very risky pick, but he might turn into a solid starter.
