2020-21 UOSL2's Most Overpaid Players (West Conf.) Edition
By. C.C. Christian
Last time I discussed the most overpaid players in the Eastern Conference. Now here is a list of the most overpaid players in the Western Conference. Some guys may deserve what they are being paid for, while some may not. But you can judge for yourself.
John Crowder C $14,718,750 + $15,945,313 + $17,171,875 + $18,398,438
Total = $66,234,376
Crowder was a 1st round pick in 2014 but later was given the max deal. Although Crowder is still fairly young, he is not worth the max right now IMO. I know Dallas had no choice but to pay him big time when he was a free agent, but ratings aside, Crowder is averaging less than 10 PPG while shooting around 40% from the field. Thankfully Crowder looks like he’s improving his game so maybe his max deal won’t look that bad very soon. Centers are also hard to find in this league so maybe guys like Crowder deserve to have this type of deal. But as of right now, he needs to keep on improving to be worth $66 million.
Mike Conley Jr. PG $27,070,312 + $29,531,250
Total = $56,601,562
Conley Jr. has been a consistent Point Guard over his career in UOSL2, but getting paid over $20 million a year late in his career is pretty bad. Although Conley Jr. is still good, his deal is very hard to move, considering Dallas is trying to rebuild soon. Conley did have his best season last year after not playing much the previous season, but when you sit back and look at how much he’s making, then you know he shouldn’t be paid that much late in his career. Conley would need to be a GREAT point guard to be worth that much, but he isn’t and will never become one. It looks like Dallas will need to sit on his remaining huge two year deal and wait until he expires.
Morris Almond SG $18,750,000
Total = $18,750,000
Morris Almond. The player known to be one of the biggest 2nd round steals in UOSL2 History. But after years have passed, Almond is nothing but a bench player who is waiting until he comes off his $18 million deal. Almond went from becoming one of the top UOSL2 scorers to averaging a career low 6 PPG. Although this is his contract year, Almond shouldn’t be worth $18 million, especially when sitting on the bench. Denver just can not wait until Almond expires after this season.
Artem Zabelin SF $17,515,625
Total = $17,515,625
Another guy on his contract year is Artem Zabelin who is making a whopping $17 million. Just like Denver to Almond, the Rockets will be so happy when Artem comes off his contract year. Artem has only averaged 8 PPG over his career and that is sad for a guy who played through his max contract like that. Clearly overpaid throughout his career.
Stevie Taylor PG
$13,750,000 + $15,000,000 + $16,250,000 + $17,500,000 + $18,750,000
Total = $81,250,000
Although Taylor had one good year last season, he was just decent before that. Right now Spurs can only hope Taylor improves beyond last season so he can be worth $81 million. But as it looks right now, Taylor’s contract is pretty big and basically it’s just a wait and see thing. Taylor is 28 and that worries me too. Hopefully his performance last season will only make him better.
Roshon Prince SF
$12,500,000 + $12,500,000 + $12,500,000 + $12,500,000
Total $50,000,000
All I can say is..BUST. Prince was drafted 3rd overall in 2014 before Tavon Sledge and ever since then Prince has not been anything but a big disappointment in UOSL2. Not sure why Washington drafted him in the first place then let him go to Detroit, where he received a max type offer. And not even there he could prove he was worth the #3 pick. Now Utah is taking the risk on Prince’s contract but it is very doubtful Prince will get any better anytime soon. Prince is truly labeled Bust/Overpaid. Utah has no choice but to sit on his deal and HOPE he shows a lick of potential left in him.
Thaddeus Young SF $16,875,000 + $15,000,000
Total = $31,875,000
After his championship role with Indiana many seasons back, Young began to decline when he was shipped to Boston, where he received big time deal and then shipped to Memphis late in his career. Young’s best seasons are clearly behind him and now Memphis has no choice but to sit on his 2 year remaining deal or buy him out before the season begins, which Memphis is trying to work on right now. But as of right now Young is just a bench player waiting until his contract ends. $31 million for a guy sitting on the bench is clearly Overpaid.
Renardo Sidney SF $18,750,000
Total = $18,750,000
Sidney was the 3rd overall pick many seasons back then later was given a max contract by Boston. But throughout his career Sidney has never lived up to his contract. Although he’s averaged near 15 and 9 over his career, Sidney has shot poorly and not really help his team. Right now Clippers are sitting on his 18 million deal and waiting until he comes off the books after this season. Sidney also has declined after he was traded for Dwight Howard. Clearly overpaid for a bench player now.
Just missed the list:
John Allen C
John Riek C
Brook Lopez C
Eric Gordon SG
