There were a ton of big moves this offseason. There are a lot of teams trying to take that last step this year. Here are the 8 biggest trades of the offseason:
Trade 1:
Sonics Trade:
J-Mychal Reese
Pacers Trade:
Derrick Favors
Charles Smith
Analysis: When this trade was made I really disliked it for the Sonics. Favors is a GREAT big man, but the duo of Rubio and Reese was almost unstoppable. I should know if they were unstoppable or not because I was destroyed by them year in and year out in the playoffs. However, the Sonics made out like bandits in the end because they were able to land McDonald in FA. Without McDonald I would hate this trade because splitting that duo was bad, but now they were able to add a post presence and keep a great combo at guard still. Love it for the Pacers. They get younger and get an ABSOLUTE stud in Reese.
Trade 2:
Miami Trades:
- Dre Kalo
- Marcus Williams
San Antonio Trades:
- Stevie Taylor
- Anthony Struthers
- Colin Swinton
Analysis: Great trade for the Heat. I really don’t like this for the Spurs. The Spurs already have Peters, which they gave up WAY too much for in a bad deal earlier. They also resigned Perdue in FA, which they should have expected to get back because they gave him a big 1 year deal. They also have Reggie Cameron who looks like he is going to be a real good PF for many years and picked up Adofis Washington, who looks promising, in the draft. FBB is a PG game and The Heat make out like bandits imo. Stevie Taylor gets it done with a lot of assists, a decent jumper, low turnovers and solid defense. Anthony Struthers is a good center who will block shots, play defense and rebound. I am not sure why the Spurs keep trading away their PGs. They have overstocked bigs and don’t have enough guards now. Rector does look promising though I am sure he will be dealt in a season or two for a center. Aar is a great GM and I respect him a lot, but this trade really has me lost.
Trade 3:
Bucks get:
Dominique Ferguson
Isaiah Jones
BJ Jenkins
Josh Selby
Joey Graham
Mavs get:
Bryce Wright (#11 pick)
Gerald Green
Analysis: This is a fantastic trade for the Bucks and a trade that needed to be made for the Mavs. The Bucks are looking to win now and a back end lotto player is not going to help put them over the top. They were in need of a wing and another shooter. Ferguson gives them exactly what they need and his contract isn’t bad either. The Mavs are rebuilding and needed to move some salary due to the hard cap. Buying out GG’s expiring will enable them to survive the hard cap and they add a young SF in Wright who looks like he might have a promising future.
Trade 4:
Grizz trade:
Jereme Richmond
DeAndre Jordan
Brook Lopez
Heat trade:
LaQuinton Ross
DaShonte Riley
Julian Washburn
Davontay Grace
2025 Miami 1st
Analysis: Love this trade for the Grizzlies. Ross is the best player in the deal. The Heat could use 1 big man, but they didn’t need to pick up two. I think the Heat gave up too much. I wouldn’t have traded Ross. Richmond is a good player, but I don’t think he is in Ross’ league. Riley is a good player as well. Jordan turns it over too much for a big that puts up 10 10 and 1.5. It isn’t horrible, but the Heat could have done better than this. Great trade for the Grizzlies and since they are trying to win this helps.
Trade 5:
Jazz Trade:
Tyler Newton
Elijah Johnson
2023 Jazz 1st
Suns Trade:
Trae Golden
Analysis: Advantage Jazz. Golden is fucking nasty now. Newton looks to have a very promising future at least as a scorer. If he can improve his D in the next few years he could be nasty too. Since the Jazz are trying to win now it’s a great trade for them and since the Suns are taking the Play strategy it is a solid trade for them. If they waited until after TC they could have gotten more, but honestly who expected Golden to have a good TC like that, I didn’t.
Trade 6:
Lakers send:
Serge Ibaka
Two Vet fas
Warriors send:
Eric Gordon
Analysis: At first I felt this was a rape job by the Lakers getting Gordon to join their lineup. Ibaka did improve in TC and I like the trade much more for the Warriors than I did before. I still believe advantage Lakers, but Play had to make a move due to hard cap. I was wrong with my first opinions. I still expect the Lakers to be the favorites and take the title in the end. I hope they do because I want Cbud to win it. The Warriors are still up there and are looking to defend their title. They aren’t the favorites, but this trade keeps them as serious contenders. This is a trade that will be fun to see how it worked out at seasons end.
Trade 7:
Miami Trades:
- Brandan Wright
- Darren Collison
- Minimum FA
Brooklyn Trades:
- Tyreke Evans
- Jhustus Cornley
- Raven Owens
Analysis: I love this trade for Miami. Wrights defense isn’t that great and he is 33 years old. Collison isn’t much of a factor anymore in UOSL. Tyreke Evans is the best player in the trade and he is a great scorer and a good defender. Cornley and Owens aren’t anything to talk about. I don’t like this for the Nets because I think they should have let Kimber and Evans play together and looked for a PG to join them. I believe they will regret this trade.
Trade 8:
Jazz Trade:
N-Kewerin Okoro
Kadaryll Bell
Xavier Horne
Roshon Prince
Suns Trade:
Theo Pinson Jr.
Derricking Jane
Landon Drew
Analysis: Even Nova said he overpaid for Pinson. Pinson has great ratings, but I would like for him to block more shots if I was going to give that much for him. This is a trade that Jazz will probably hate in a couple of years if they don’t already. Other than Golden their team is still REALLY young and Golden isn’t even old himself. After seeing TC I think the Jazz should have stayed put. Bell looks like he is going to be really good, Okoro is only 20 and looking real good and Horne looks like he will be a good PG too. Gotta love this trade for the Suns. The Suns are going to be a team to fear in a few years and so will the Jazz. These teams may actually end up as two of the main contenders in the West down the road. Then we can really tell who won the trade. Until then I am going to say that it’s the Suns big time and I doubt Nova would disagree. Hopefully Pinson + Jenkins can be a dominant force down low for his sake. The Jazz 3-4-5 is 23/24/23 years old and are going to be a force for many years. I will love seeing Jenkins/Pinson/Davis vs Okoro/Mack/Bell in a few years.
