I have yet to write an article in UOSL, despite being on board for about 10 seasons now. I am good at writing long, personal articles like this one in BBS and I want to see how this type of article will be received in UOSL, with the ratings system and what not. So here goes:
Overview:
UOSL2 was the first sim league that gave me a job as a GM ( I have only been involved in sims for roughly 6 months). Because of that I will always be thankful that Ducky saw something that he liked in me and gave me an opportunity to expand my knowledge of FBB. (Mainly I posted my balls off as an AGM in BBS). Getting a team was exciting, regardless of the fact that I really had no idea what to do. Under the 1 week trade ban thing and PM'ing Ducky I traded away what little semblance of talent I had for expirings and picks. I then followed through on the new GM routine of tanking, which netted me Danos with the 2nd overall pick after one year of tanking. That kid can shoot. Armed with Danos and not much else, I had no choice but to tank again for another season. After that season I got the 4th overall pick, which I traded away for Adofis Washington and the #7 pick of that year to the Spurs. Adofis looked pretty good at the time but was truly a terrible players a few seasons later. With the 7th pick I chose Marcel Frazier who I promptly traded away to the Magic for DeMarcus Cousins. Cousins was truly a star at the time. A- big man ratings. I also got rid of Rodney Hood who at the time was a complete cancer. He had something like B/B scoring ratings with B+ defense and B scouted potential and perpetually sucked compared to his ratings and couldn't sim worth a damn, not to mention he was on a front loaded max. He pretty much sucked.
Some more Trades and competing:
Lucky for me at the time I was looking to compete the GSW under the careful guidance of the tank conscientious GM Play were having a fire sale. I traded 2 firsts for DaVante Moore and 1 for Anthony Williams. Overall it wasn't a bad trade because Williams was worth the 2 firsts, while Moore was only worth the 1 first. His ratings looked so nice at the time, but he never developed. At the time I had a decent lineup of Shai Fields/Dean Danos/DaVante Moore/DeMarcus Cousins/Anthony Williams, which was good enough for a decent playoff spot, but I still needed more. By far my favorite trade in this league was Fields and a first for Roberts. He had one of the better TC's a few seasons ago and I was so high on him. In retrospect I probably should have traded him while his value was highest. He is still very good though so I don't really regret it. I also picked up some solid role players like Peters and Wright for expirings and picks. For the most part those were the trades of importance in the league.
Playoff Success(or lack there of):
I have been in the playoffs for the past 5 consecutive seasons or so. All these appearances have inevitably lead to an early exit. The highlight of my career here so far was getting to the Western Conference Finals where I lost to Ducky in 5. (Embarrassing, I know). For the past two years, history has repeated itself for me. I was the 4 seed in the playoffs and beat the Grizz in the first round only to get sent packing by the 1 seed, the Warriors. It is clear to me that I still have a lot to learn as far as making a truly elite team. The basics of making a team capable of making the playoffs are really pretty simple to me, but the next level brings me some trouble.
The other highlight of my career was how I got to the WCF, which was as the 4 seed (I seem to really like the 4 seed). I had to beat the 1 seed,which at the time was a stacked Los Angeles Lakers team. I'm sure I can get it together as far as making a true contender. It just takes some time.
My thoughts on the league:
I have always like UOSL. It certainly has it's positives and negatives like any other sim league. The activity here could be a little better, but the group of GM's we have here are pretty solid and do not like to get into petty arguments. The shear fact that the league has been running for 20+ seasons is a testament to it's success when most sim leagues these days fall by the wayside in just a few short seasons. The trade/ trade market has always been weak for my liking as well. The irony here is that I am being a hypocrite in saying that the activity/ trading isn't up to snuff, because I am certainly a reason for this. The amount of PM's and posts I have in UOSL are nothing compared to that of BBS. A reason for this would have to be that I am to an extent, a product of my simming environment. BBS is active as any league on the internet and blockbusters occur all the time. Because of this I feel the need to be in the loop and to post a lot as well. This lackadaisical approach to UOSL is one of two reasons I have really started to lose interest in my team, with the other being the fact that I suck in the playoffs.
I truly think that UOSL is just a few new/better/active GM's away from being a truly elite sim league. While it is most definitely above average by far, it has always been missing a few main ingredients. One main problem is GM's like me that do not have the same interest in this league that they do in other leagues. There have been numerous examples of this in the past. (Mark, Aaron, Pig, aar, Tiger, I'm sure there are many others but I can't think of them.) Another reason is that some of the GM's are not that good. I would like to think that after 3,4,5 years of tanking you could build a winning squad that could at least compete for a playoff spot, but this does not seem to be the case with a few teams. I do not mean to call anyone out with this statement, but seriously, FBB is only a game, and a game can be won. I would really like to see something like BBS's contract year implemented here to make the league more interesting. It seems like every year for the past few years you can name the 4 best teams in each respective conference.
In conclusion, I do really like the league and find it to be a nice compliment to my other leagues. Part of the reason for writing this league was to hopefully spark my interest in the team again. Hopefully that part can be accomplished, but for the most part, I really think I need to blow this thing up, something that should certainly get interest back in the team. I have been saying this for over a season but it really needs to happen, probably after this season.
